Parents staying with children

If your child is being admitted to Ward E17, there is some information here about facilities available 

Sleeping over

One parent may stay with their child and we provide Z-beds for you to sleep alongside your child.  

If your child is staying in a bay, it is hospital pollicy that the curtains around the bed must remain open overnight. 

Parents staying with children in side-rooms may use the toilets and showers in the side room.  Parents of children staying in the bays can use shower facilities on the ward and toilet facilities just adjacent to the ward. 

Additional parent/family accommodation

Currently it is only possible for one parent to stay with their child. 

Nottingham Children's Hospital is in the process of developing parent/family accommodation a short distance from the hospital for a second parent/carer and siblings to be able to stay close by during long admissions. 

Meals

There is a parents' kitchen with a boiler for making hot drinks, a fridge freezer and a microwave. We kindly ask that you tidy up after yourselves and wash up any mugs and crockery used. This ensures the parents kitchen remains a clean and welcoming place for families to use!

Please ensure any food you bring from home is clearly labelled with your name and date as we are unable to keep unlabelled items. 

There are coffee bars and a restaurant on site for you to purchase food. 

Every parent who is resident overnight with their child is entitled to one £7 voucher per day which can be used in the D Floor restaurant.

If you are a resident parent staying with your child who is under 6 months, you are entitled to meals from our catering trolley as an alternative to the voucher.

Other facilities

There is a washing machine and a tumble dryer that parents may access.  

There is a shop and a pharmacy in the hospital which sell basic toiletries and supplies.  

We have a limited supply of nappies and baby milk which are used in emergencies, so we ask that you bring an adequate supply of of each for your stay. 

Parking

Parking is now free for all parents/carers for the duration of your child’s hospital admission. Up to two number plates can be added on to a permit. Ward staff will give you a voucher which you need to take to the car park office on B floor at the main entrance (opposite Costa). For this to be valid you must be in one of the NUH trust car parks and not a private car park. We encourage visitors to make use of public transport such as the tram and Medi-link bus service as parking can be limited on site. If your child is coming back on a regular basis for treatment, please discuss this with us as we may be able to arrange a discounted pass for car parking for a limited time.

COVID

We no longer routinely test patients for COVID on admission.  However, if you or your child has symptoms before an elective admission, you should test before coming into hospital.

The admission will have to be postponed if your child is positive, and you will not be allowed to accompany your child if you are positive.

If your child has symptoms and tests positive before an emergency admission, they will be admitted to a different ward where the kidney team will still look after them. 

Spiritual Needs

We have facilities for prayer and reflection. In the hospital there is a chapel, a quiet room, a Muslim prayer room and rooms for other faith groups. More information is kept on the ward or on the hospital website chaplaincy page. 

Practical and emotional support

We have two social workers who are an integral part of our team. They provide support to families during their time in hospital and when visiting the children's clinic.

They can also advise about financial matters and benefits you may be eligible to claim.
